Egypt- Vocabulary
Post and lintel- method of spanning space that employs two or more vertical posts supporting a horizontal line.
Corbel- architectural feature created when succeeding layers of a material are cantilevered slightly over those below.
Arch- method of spanning space that uses wedge-shaped pieces that are smaller than the opening.
Cantilever- proportion of a structure that projects beyond the support beneath it.
Truss- triangle shaped device used to span space. Very stable if at least one corner is attached.
Voussoir- Wedge shaped unit used to form an arch by placing narrow end toward the center
Keystone- wedge shaped unit at apex of an arch
Extrados- outer curve of an arch
Intrados- inner curve
Spring point- point at which arch begins to curve
Spring line- imaginary line between two spring points
Base- enlarged cushion on which a column shaft sits.
Shaft- vertical post between base and capital
Rustication- blocks cut of four faces to fit together easily, stone work, ruff or natural look
Interior design- design of interiors that enhances the quality of apace and improves function or aesthetics.
Ornamentation- deliberate treatment of a surface or object to provide decoration of interest.
Relief carving- type of carving which background is removed so the finish design is raised above it
Low relief- design is cut from top only. (same as bas-relief)
High relief- relief carving which design is undercut to release the back from the background(same as alto-relief)
Molding- relief carving which sharp edges are rounded or a pattern design cut into a long surface by removing material.
Spiral- begins with sharp curve and winds outward away from central point in an ever-lessing curve.
Stylized- pattern inspired by nature but simplified so only impression of real object is given.
