The Works
Water
-raw sewage was draining into rivers, people who darnk got sick and died
-long stone channels carried clean water from nearby hills to the towns
-man-made for carrying water
-major engeneering achievment over a period of 500 years, aqueducts were built to bring water to rome from far away as 57 miles. some are still in use
-water flowed into the city by force of gravity alone and usually went through a series of distribution tanks within the city
Baths
-most cities has at least one if not more
-provided in private villas town houses and forts they were also called thermae
-important place in the lies of romans
-built as public monuments they were used by everyone
-used hypocaust system for heating the building and pools, under the floor heating system had hot air heated from the basement fires flowing between the brick and concrete cloumns which support the floor
-flows through wall ducts into the rooms and quickly heats them
-fires in basement were stocked by slaves of the baths
Roads
-essential for growth of empire to move armies
-spanned over 52000 miles and contained 372 links
-called viae
Roman sewers
-many houses had flushing toiled indoor plumbing and a complex sewer systme
-used to drain local marshes and carry waste to river
-the use of lead pipes in the sewer and plumbing systems led to widespread lead poisinging which contribuled to the decline in the bithing rate and decay of roman society leading up to the fall of rome
