Egyptian Columns

You cant see the hall for the column because due to absence of the arch in ancient egypt it was difficult to span large distances with a stone.

Blocks were put into place and as the column rose a mud ramp was built to place a higher blocks, once completed  the capital was dressed and as a mud ramp was removed so the lower blocks were dresses and decorated.

Lotiform column- have ribbed shafts whhich represent the stems of the plant and can be topped with capitals representing either open or closed lotus buds.

Palmiform cloumns- do not actually represent palm trees but rather eight palm fronds tied to a pole.

Papyrus columns- circulare or ribbed shafts. single or multistem papyrus plants
bell shaped or losed bud capitals
free standing papyriform cloumns became popular by the time of the new kingdom
